Why Trick-or-Treating is Better in Durant OK

Why Trick-or-Treating is Better in Durant OK

Olay, October 31st is right around the corner and families are looking forward to a day of trick-or-treating. To most kids, this would entail a series of door knocking and traversing from one street to another with the accompaniment of their parents.

Safety is one of the major concerns of parents during this time of year. From stories of tainted candies to meeting total strangers at night, a certain degree of creepiness always looms around.

Among the hazards that come with trick-or-treating is pedestrian safety. According to the National Safety Council, “In the U.S., October ranks no. 2 in motor vehicle deaths by month” and “…darting or running into the road accounted for about 15% of deaths in kids ages 5 to 9”.  Most of these incidents usually occur due to an increased number of kids crossing the road after dusk, wearing dark clothing that can increase the difficultly of drivers to easily identify pedestrians.

Thankfully, in the quiet town of Durant in Oklahoma, trick-or-treating is celebrated much differently. This community has its own unique way of making the event extra special.

While kids in the rest of the country spend the night full of uncertain surprises, Durant Main Street plans a day of fun for everyone.

Every year, Durant OK is made more enjoyable because the fun is centered on downtown Main Street. Since the main street is closed off to vehicles for the whole day affair, it makes trick-or-treating safer for everyone.

From the 1st to 4th Street, local businesses and organizations hold booths to pass out candies to the kids. The area is lined up with carnival activities and play spaces that add EXTRA FUN to the trick or treat excitement.

There are scarecrow decorating contests, costume contests, games, pumpkin painting, outdoor movies, and not to mention a whole lot more fun than going from house to house in search of candy and other goodies. There was even a zombie-themed obstacle course last year. Some activities require tickets, but most are free.

Another thing that makes trick or treating better in Durant OK is the police visibility. The Durant Police sends extra patrols to guard the Main Street programs. Security is provided throughout the day, giving the families more time to focus on enjoyment.

The beauty of this event is that the families have the option to spend the day trick-or-treating and then take a quick respite in preparation for the other roads and neighborhoods that will kick off the night time festivities of even more fun.

With Durant OK organizing events like this, it builds a deeper sense of community. Spending this holiday on Durant Main Street is far better because it’s safer for everyone. It’s like one big party where visitors and residents get a chance to mingle and have fun.

This year, trick-or-treating in Durant will take place on Tuesday, October 31, 2017.
